Frequently Asked Questions

We understand that losing a pet is a deeply personal and emotional experience. Below are answers to some of the most common questions about pet bereavement counselling and how we can support you.

Why do I feel so devastated? Is it normal to grieve this much for a pet?

Yes, absolutely. Pets are family, and losing them can be just as painful as losing any loved one. Grief can bring a wide range of emotions, including sadness, guilt, loneliness, anger, or even relief. It’s important to know that intense grief—crying, trouble sleeping, feeling empty—is a natural response to losing a cherished companion. You are not alone, and your grief is valid.

How can pet loss counselling help me?

Grieving a pet can feel isolating, especially when those around you may not fully understand the depth of your loss. Pet bereavement counselling provides:

🐾 A safe, compassionate space to express your grief without judgment.

🐾 Personalised coping strategies to help you process emotions at your own pace.

🐾 Support from a trained professional who understands the unique pain of pet loss. If you feel overwhelmed, stuck in grief, or need guidance in honouring your pet’s memory, we are here to support you.

I feel guilty about my pet’s death, especially because I had to euthanise. Can counselling help with that?

Yes. Guilt is a very common emotion for pet owners, especially after making difficult end-of-life decisions. You might be wondering, Did I do the right thing? Did I wait too long? Could I have done more? These feelings are completely natural. The burden of choosing euthanasia can add intense doubt, guilt, or a sense of failure on top of grief.

Through counselling, we help you process these emotions, understand that you acted out of love and compassion, and find peace with your decision. You were there for your pet when they needed you most, and that is an act of selfless kindness.

Do you offer group support or just one-on-one?

Currently, we offer private, one-on-one sessions because we believe every grief journey is unique and requires personalised care. However, if you are looking for a support group, we can recommend reputable pet loss support communities that may align with your needs.

How do I book a session and what are the fees?

You can schedule a session by: 📞 Calling us: 0493 993 025 📧 Emailing us: mike@foreverloved.com.au

Each session typically lasts 50 minutes. We offer both online and in-person sessions, with flexible scheduling to accommodate your needs.

What if my loss happened a long time ago – is it too late to seek help?

It is never too late to seek support. Grief does not have an expiration date. Some people struggle with unresolved emotions years after losing a pet. If your grief is resurfacing or affecting your well-being, counselling can help you process your emotions in a safe and compassionate way.

Can you help if my pet is missing (or I had to rehome my pet)?

Yes. Loss doesn’t always mean death. Losing a pet due to circumstances beyond your control—such as a missing pet or rehoming due to life changes—can be just as painful as bereavement. This type of loss, known as ambiguous grief, can bring feelings of helplessness, regret, and guilt. We provide support to help you navigate this unique and complex form of grief.

Is the service confidential?

Yes. All sessions are private and strictly confidential. We adhere to professional counselling ethics, ensuring that anything you share remains secure and respected. Your healing journey is yours alone, and we provide a judgment-free space where you can feel safe to grieve and heal.

What are your qualifications?

Our counselling services are provided by trained and certified professionals with expertise in grief counselling and pet bereavement support. We have extensive experience in helping individuals process loss and find meaningful ways to honour their pets.
